Music in the Courtyards 2010

Long Summer evenings are made for eating outside and relaxing to mellow music. Start your weekends with live music in the courtyards at Milsom Place on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6.00-9.00pm, and Sunday afternoons from 12.30-3.00pm

John Diver – John plays electric and nylon strung guitar in a wide range of styles from Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Country, Classical, Latin and Flamenco. He’s always trying new types of music and prides himself on being adaptable.

Phil Harris – Minor Swing is a band that allows Phil to explore his love of the music of Django Reinhardt. The band evolved from the group Café Nuage, a mainly classical and finger style jazz duo he formed with aspiring pupil Stuart Carter-Smith, now of Gypsy Fire. Minor Swing went on to tour extensively, including six trips to America, and have a list of high profile gigs to their credit from London to Los Angeles. You can expect hot club swing, bebop and the mellow tones of cool blues and bossa.

Richard Jones – Richard is a young Violinist based in Bath. Having graduated from University, he is now a professional musician, performing regularly nationwide within various ensembles. From an early age he took a keen interest in music, particularly excelling within improvisation and early Jazz and Blues. Performing solo and as a duo, Richards’ performances are the perfect backdrop to a relaxed Summer evening!

Steve Franks – Steve is an extremely talented musician from Cheltenham who plays all the pieces you would want to hear on the Spanish guitar – Classical, Jazz, Latin & pop - from Bach to Bacharach, from Swing to Sting, from Bossa Nova to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Brejeiro – Brejeiro is an exciting new acoustic group that specialises in the Choro style of music from Brazil. Twin mandolins play haunting melodies over pulsating rhythm guitar, all propelled by dynamic Latin percussion that makes dancing irresistible. Brejeiro mix traditional Choro tunes with contemporary songs and original compositions in a vibrant show that has been getting rave reviews.

Jon Pickard specialises in live solo Spanish / Classical / Flamenco / South American guitar music. He works solely as a performer and teacher, mostly as a wedding guitarist or for corporate events, parties etc & has been a professional musician for over 20 years.

Manos Puestas - Through their stylish original compositions and innovative re-workings of Bebop classics, the Manos Puestas Quartet combine the improvisational flair and technical expertise of the jazz idiom with a deep commitment to groove and audience excitement. Previous festival appearances for MPQ’s musicians include WOMAD, Glastonbury and Montreux Jazz.

“Two man ting” is the duo project of Jon Lewis and Jah-man Aggrey of Le Cod Afrique. Improvised voice, Guitar, loops and percussion create an innovative and exciting mix of Afro-jazz, Highlife and dance. They have played extensively throughout Europe at some major festivals.

Mel & Henry-Jazz Times Two combines Mel Henry on Trombone and Terry Veal on Guitar. Playing an extensive repertoire of Classic Modern Jazz Standards (tunes by Cole Porter, Jimmy Van Heusen, Jerome Kern, Victor Young et al.)

Mikhail Asanovic has recently graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music where he studied under the tuition of Craig Ogden and Gordon Crosskey for four years. Mikhail started to play the guitar when he was 14 whilst at Ampleforth College, under the tuition of John Mackenzie.

Daniel Gerrard has been playing guitar professionally for 17 years, starting out in blues, rock n' roll and pop music & more recently moving on to Flamenco/Gypsy music. After discovering busking, taking out his brand of dual guitar (recording his own backing track) he travelled to Barcelona in 2002, busking throughout the day in front of various restaurants, and gigging or jamming throughout the night. Now back on UK soil Daniel continues to play, write and record, the latest being the tracks he recorded at Lyndon Greedy's studio in Bristol.
